Abstract: Social Responsibility gained strong momentum in Brazil during the 1990s, through the action of non-governmental entities and research institutes aware of the issue. The research aims to observe the work of diffusion and institutionalization of the phenomenon of social responsibility in the Brazilian context. A survey was carried out of the institutions that work on the theme in the country in the most diverse ways, from drafting guidelines to developing indicators. The results of the survey show that the work to disseminate the theme began in the country at the end of the 1980s and at that moment, actions aimed at government social responsibility emerged. The results show that the main Brazilian indicator, promoted by the Ethos Institute, appeared most recently in 2002. The research concludes that social responsibility initiatives in Brazil are more recent than in the United States and Europe, whose discussions around the theme began. in the 1950s. the first work to disseminate the theme in Brazil emerged in a period of political and economic vulnerability, revealing the importance of these actions and their philanthropic character. It is concluded that social responsibility is a phenomenon under construction in Brazil, with late onset.</description>
